"I proposed the Garden Village programme to Government with the principle objective of providing Councils with a framework to deliver good placemaking and high quality well-planned attractive places and communities where people want to live and work, instead of endless bland housing estates ruining the edge of historic towns. Key to this is delivering all the facilities people need from parks and gardens to shops, cafes, schools and employment. In short, creating new communities with all the best qualities of traditional English market towns and villages.
I am acting in an advisory capacity to help ensure that the proposals for a Garden Village at Orwell Green achieve all of these aims and more. There is a real opportunity to work with the council, local stakeholders and surrounding local authorities to create a long-term partnership to design and deliver the best possible community, of the highest quality. The commitment is to meet all the objectives of the Government’s Garden Communities programme, and more importantly meet the needs of the people living and working in Suffolk, especially the next generation currently priced out of homes. This vision document outlines the approach taken and the opportunity presented by this well-connected site, but more over it is part of a process that is all about working with the community and the council to meet these local needs.
Garden Villages have an important part to play in meeting our housing needs. Large numbers of new homes can often be best achieved though planning for larger scale Garden Communities, providing they are well planned, well-located and designed, and supported by the necessary infrastructure and facilities.
If supported, Orwell Green provides a real opportunity to deliver a successful Garden Village - a truly sustainable new community people will be proud and delighted to live in."
